Hoover, Devon Alan
November 18, 1969 - April 23, 2023

Devon Alan Hoover, aged 53, passed away on Sunday, April 23, 2023. Devon was born to Clarence and Lauretta Hoover on November 18, 1969, in Elkhart, Indiana.

Devon was the fourth child of seven and the middle member of what the family affectionately called "the three little ones." He took initiative in this little group, planning their pretend games and determining the rules that governed their play. Games of Monopoly went on for days as he kept suggesting new rules to extend the game and helped negotiate bank loans for struggling players. His early life was not all play and included plenty of manual labor. Until he left for college, Devon worked on the family dairy farm--milking the cows, planting and harvesting crops, and doing many other chores alongside the rest of the family. One of his hobbies was tending his own small garden in the backyard, which he had filled with herbs and perennials. He also raised and sold potatoes during his teenage years.

As the only son, Devon could have taken over the family farm, but he decided early in life that he wanted to become a doctor. He graduated from Indiana University School of Medicine in 1996 and completed his residency at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit. Throughout his career , he served his patients with exceptional skill and compassion. At the time of his death, he had been practicing for 27 years as a board-certified neurosurgeon specializing in the treatment of neck and back disorders. According to Ascension St. John Hospital, Dr. Hoover was recognized each year since 2008 "as one of Metro Detroit's most respected neurological surgeons in Hour Detroit magazine's annual 'Top Docs' rankings."

Devon loved his home in the Boston-Edison Historic District of Detroit, Michigan. Since he purchased the home in 2008, he had been steadily transforming it room by room with period décor and carefully selected antiques. He was essentially the curator of his own museum, which he loved sharing with friends, family, and visitors.
Devon had an eye for excellence across many areas of life, including his yard and hedges. He hired a landscape service for some of the outside maintenance, but the hedges were his specialty, and only he could meet his own standards. One of his friends jokingly threatened to burn down the hedges because Devon was declining too many social invitations, saying, "Oh, I can't come because I need to trim the hedges."
Devon loved flowers and gardening. Each week he went to Eastern Market and brought back bouquets to display in his home.

Visitors always noticed the gorgeous fresh flower arrangement he kept in his entryway. He had recently installed a greenhouse in his backyard, designed as a replica of the one originally on the historic property. Devon always tended it himself and said that if he had another life, he would be a gardener.
Devon loved his city and gave generously to the community in many ways. He often hosted a picturesque Christmas party that became a bit of a tradition in his neighborhood. As a board member of the Detroit Opera, he encouraged rising opera stars by hosting intimate concerts at his home. He was planning to host a fundraiser for the Fraternite Notre Dame on May 4, but the event had to be canceled due to his untimely death.

Though Devon had many interests and demands on his time, his family and friends were always a priority. He rarely missed a Hoover family event and made the drive to Indiana frequently to visit his parents and sisters, often playing with his many nieces and nephews. He spent quality time with many friends and enjoyed traveling with them to unique places around the world.
Devon's mother, Lauretta Hoover, passed away four days after his death. Devon is survived by his father, Clarence Hoover, Goshen, IN, and by six sisters, Diana (Andrew) Wenger, Goshen, IN; Lila (Wendell) Graber, Sault Ste. Marie, ON, Canada; Linda (Lowell) Herschberger, Brooklyn, NY; Beth (Thad) Lechlitner, Middlebury, IN; Andrea (Jerald) Martin, Nappanee, IN; Laurie Hoover, Ephrata, PA; 22 nieces and nephews; and 8 great nieces and nephews.
Donations can be made in Devon's honor to the Fraternite Notre Dame (www.fraternitenotredame.org) or the Detroit Opera (www.detroitopera.org).
Devon was a gift from God, a beloved son, brother, uncle, and friend. He touched many lives with his kindness and generosity. We all will miss him greatly.

Horst, Blanche Mohler
August 30, 1928 - July 11, 2023

Blanche Horst passed away peacefully on Tuesday, July 11, 2023, at Landis Homes in Lititz, PA. She was born on August 30, 1928, to Martin K. and Barbara (Siegrist) Mohler in Ephrata, PA.

In 1951 she married Nevin L. Horst, and two years later they answered the call to serve as missionaries in Ethiopia with Eastern Mennonite Missions. In that capacity, Blanche worked in a variety of roles-running the Mennonite Guest House in Dire Dawa, working with women's groups, and raising a family.

Throughout her life, Blanche was a teacher. She graduated with a B.S. in education at Eastern Mennonite College and continued studying at Millersville University. She first stepped into a classroom at Manor Mennonite School. Later she taught art and music at the mission station in Bedeno, Ethiopia, English at the Bible Academy in Nazareth, Ethiopia, as well as at the Mennonite church school in Addis Ababa. After returning to the States in 1976, Blanche taught at Manheim Christian Day School and Locust Grove Mennonite School. In their retirement, Blanche and Nevin served as missionaries in Enemasi, Kenya, from 1995 to 1997.

Blanche proceeded through life with a great commitment to hospitality, a lesson reinforced by her time in Ethiopia and enjoyed making Ethiopian food. In meal planning, as everywhere, her wisdom shone through: "As I think about dessert, I start with whipped cream and decide what to put under it."

Horst, Byrdalene Kay Wyse
September 4, 1941 - March 21, 2023

Byrdalene Kay (Wyse) Horst, 81, of Goshen, died peacefully Tuesday, March 21, 2023, on the first full day of spring.

She was born September 4, 1941 in Archbold, Ohio, to Cora (Nofziger) and Harold Wyse. Her siblings are Rosemary, d. 2022 (Gerhard Reimer, d. 2019), Buetta, d. 2006 (Marion Bontrager), Dean (Berneda Grieser), Denton (Faith Troyer), Sanford (Judy Wyse), Allen (Jo Nofziger), Ned (Debra Rupp), Norma (Mark Ramseyer) and Sara (Rich Wenger).

Byrdalene married Willis G. Horst (1939-2013) on July 4, 1964. Surviving are their son René (Marlene Harder Horst, Em, Tali) of Boone, North Carolina; daughter Carmen (Eric Kurtz, Elisa, Nayli) of Goshen; daughter Emily (Malcolm Sedaca, Khalil) of Córdoba, Argentina; and daughter Cristina (Lucas Robert, Francisco, Serafín) of Córdoba, Argentina.

Byrdalene's mother’s enthusiasm for local and overseas missions inspired her interest in Spanish and mission work. At Eastern Mennonite [University] she met Willis, when they both volunteered to do neighborhood outreach. Her dream of becoming a missionary led her to volunteer for a summer at the Mennonite boarding school in Cachipay, Colombia.

After she received a BA in Spanish Education from Goshen College in 1964, Byrdalene and Willis taught on the Diné (Navajo) reservation in Arizona. They grew to love relating to indigenous people. After further training in Spanish, linguistics, and seminary, they served with Mennonite Mission Network from 1971 to 2010, in accompaniment with indigenous churches in the Chaco region of northern Argentina.

Byrdalene and Willis helped shape the radical approach of the mission work in the Chaco, supporting the indigenous leaders of the independent Iglesia Evangelica Unida. As part of what became a multicultural, multi-lingual team, Byrdalene taught literacy, led Bible study, served many meals, and traveled many kilometers, while nurturing in her children a love of language and music. Byrdalene recorded and collected thousands of hours of Qom and Pilagá church music.

During their last five years in the Chaco, Byrdalene worked with the Argentine Bible Society and Pilagá readers to produce dramatized recordings of the Gospels and Acts in Pilagá, to make scriptures available to non-readers. Byrdalene was a gentle, trusted spiritual friend to many women.

Byrdalene loved words and literature, and was an insatiable reader, but her first language was music. Almost as long as she had breath, she joined her perfect pitch and clear harmony to any singing. Her passion for music and singing continues in her children and grandchildren. She has touched many lives with her love and kindness.

A memorial service will be held July 15, 2023, at 11:30 a.m. at Walnut Hill Mennonite Church.

Memorial gifts may be made to Mennonite Mission Network.

Huber, Harold Eugene
August 19, 1939 - June 28, 2023

Harold Eugene Huber, 83, of Rockingham, passed away unexpectedly on June 28, 2023.

Harold was born on Aug. 19, 1939, in Brunnerville, Lancaster County, Pa. to Willis and Beulah Good Huber and had an older sister, Verna Lehman.

He graduated from Manheim Central High School in Manheim, Pa. in 1957 and then continued his studies at Elizabethtown College (B.S., 1961), New York University (MA, 1966), and the University of Virginia (doctoral studies). While living in New York, Harold met his future wife, Vida Jane Swartzentruber, on a shared subway trip to the Seventh Avenue Mennonite Church in Harlem. A few years later, when Harold and Vida each moved to Harrisonburg, Va. to work at Eastern Mennonite University, their courtship solidified and they were married in 1970. When they welcomed their daughter, Heidi Marie, in 1974, Harold courageously become a stay-at-home father, bending the period’s gender norms in support of his wife’s career goals and their shared commitment to family.

After almost 40 years of service to Eastern Mennonite University, Harold retired in 2004. In his early years at the college, he was an Instructor in Sociology, serving for two years as acting chairman of the Sociology Department and as the Director of EMU’s Urban Seminar in New York City. When Heidi went to school, Harold followed his passion for social and church history into roles within the Menno Simons Historical Library and EMU Archives and was active in numerous Mennonite historical societies. In retirement, he continued to volunteer in EMU’s library as he cherished his longstanding connection to that community.

Broad Street Mennonite Church was the other community to which Harold dedicated significant energy throughout his adult life, serving at various times as administrator, secretary, trustee and historian to the congregation. Most of Harold’s closest friendships grew within this church community over the years.

Harold is survived by his daughter, Heidi; son-in-law, David Schanberger; and two grandchildren, Cooper and Arianna of Manchester, Md. Harold was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Vida, and lived the final 18 years of his life as a widower. The social support he experienced with the ROMEOS (Retired Old Men Eating Out), a group of fellow widowers, made these years more meaningful and fun.

Harold will be remembered as a dedicated husband (“Haroldie”), father (“Daddy”), and grandfather (“Pop Pop”) with an infectious grin, keen mind, and heart for humble service. A man of deep faith, Harold is now at peace as he dances with the angels.

Services will take place on Thursday, July 6, 2023, at Lindsey Funeral Home in Harrisonburg, Va. Visitation with family will begin at 10 a.m. A Celebration of Life will be at 11 a.m. followed by interment of ashes at Weavers Church Cemetery.

Please send memorial donations to the Brethren and Mennonite Heritage Center in Harrisonburg, Va., Mennonite Life in Lancaster, Pa. or an historical society of your choice.

Hurst, Daniel H.
January 5, 1952 - April 2, 2023

Daniel H. Hurst, 71, of Myerstown and formerly of Danville, went home to be with Jesus, Sunday, April 2, 2023, at WellSpan York Hospital. He was born Jan. 5, 1952, to the late John J. and Alma K. (Horst) Hurst. He was the loving husband of Mary Jane (Nolt) Hurst. On March 24, they celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary.

Dan loved to sing, and he shared that love by serving as a song leader in church most of his life, lastly at Myerstown Mennonite Church, where he was a member. He grew up farming (his first love). This was where his fondness for collecting toy tractors stemmed. He worked in an ag-related business for several years and for the last 25-plus years worked at Home Improvement in Lebanon. Polio brought many physical challenges throughout his life. He needed to rely on others for help with certain tasks, but his determination to provide for his family was evident as he pushed through the pain many days instead of using it as an excuse. Dan enjoyed talking to people whether it was an acquaintance from long ago or someone he just met. It didn't make a difference. What was most important to him was his family. He was happiest spending time with his children and grandchildren.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his children, Jeff (Jan) Hurst of Rome, Dan (Sarah) Hurst of Lititz, Lisa Hurst of Myerstown, Lori Hurst of Myerstown, Dawn (Larry) Stauffer of Bethel, Amanda (Leon) Horst of Mount Aetna, Angie (Daniel) Snader of Myerstown, and Joey (Michelle) Hurst of Bethel; 18 grandchildren and one great-grandchild. He is also survived by siblings, Harold (Ann) Hurst, Ruth (Moses Jr.) Yoder, Lois (Ralph) Owens, Esther (Jim) Lapp, John (Bonnie) Hurst, Paul (Gloria) Hurst, Orpha (Ken) Zimmerman, and Nelson (Cindy) Hurst.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by sisters, Miriam Hurst and Alma Burkholder; brother-in-law, Barry Burkholder; and granddaughter, Jiana Hurst.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, April 7, at Myerstown Mennonite Church, 624 N. College St., Myerstown, PA 17067. A viewing will be held from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Thursday, April 6, at the Fairview Reception Center, 141 Jackson Road, Lebanon, PA 17042. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.
